An Illinois True Crime Classic of Dr. John Dale Cavaness, Parricide, and Life Insurance Fraud

In the region of Southern Illinois known as "Little Egypt," Dr. John Dale Cavaness was revered as a compassionate country doctor who cared for indigent patients. Beneath his public stature, Cavaness was a violent domestic abuser who engineered the murders of two of his own sons—Mark in 1977 and Sean in 1984—to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in life insurance payouts.

Edgar Award-winning author Darcy O'Brien documents the Illinois State Police and federal investigation that linked the two homicides. The book tracks ballistics analysis, insurance paper trails, and the 1985 capital murder trial that brought Cavaness to justice.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Darcy O'Brien delivers a masterpiece of Southern Illinois true crime and psychological exposure. Packed with courtroom testimony and regional detail, this classic is essential reading for fans of Truman Capote, Joe McGinniss, and Jerry Bledsoe.
