Dr. Samuel Shem delivers a satirical novel exposing the grueling residency training inside a legendary Boston hospital.

Following intern Roy Basch during his first year of residency at "The House of God"—a prestigious Boston teaching hospital—Samuel Shem's classic satirical novel captures the absurdities and emotional exhaustion of medical training. Guided by "The Fat Man," a brilliant senior resident who relies on cynical rules of survival, Basch and his peer interns confront sleep deprivation and dehumanizing hospital bureaucracy.

Balancing dark humor with tragic realism, Shem exposes the psychological toll of internship while challenging the institutional medical culture of late-20th-century healthcare.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Samuel Shem combines razor-sharp medical satire, iconic dark humor, and an unflinching look at hospital residency. A landmark 1979 Dell paperback novel required reading for medical students, doctors, and fiction fans.
