Sailor Alvah Simon deliberately freezes his steel sailboat into the Arctic sea ice above the Arctic Circle to endure five months of total polar night.

Seeking ultimate solitude and testing human endurance, veteran sailor Alvah Simon sailed his 36-foot steel cutter Roger Robin to Taybay Inlet on North Baffin Island, allowing the sea ice to freeze around the hull for an isolated Arctic winter.

Alone with his cat in sub-zero dark, Simon faced howling blizzards, carbon monoxide poisoning, equipment failure, and prowling polar bears. His harrowing memoir chronicles physical survival alongside a deep psychological and spiritual confrontation with extreme isolation.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Alvah Simon delivers intense wilderness survival pacing, nautical tradecraft, and profound Arctic isolation reflections. A gripping 1999 Crown paperback for fans of Into Thin Air, polar exploration, and nautical survival memoirs.
