Robert C. Sloane's Cult 1981 Suburban Horror Novel of Ancient Monsters and Small-Town Terror

First published in 1981 by Crown Publishers, A Nice Place to Live by Robert C. Sloane is a thrilling cult classic from the golden era of 1980s vintage horror. Blending suburban paranoia with ancient creature-feature horror, Sloane turns the quintessential American dream of homeownership into a terrifying nightmare.

The narrative follows Nick and Christine Marino, a young couple who move with their young son Joey to a quiet, picturesque home in the suburban town of Mill Harbor. Hoping to escape city life and build a peaceful future, their fresh start quickly disintegrates as Nick begins undergoing an eerie, hostile personality transformation. As Christine desperately searches for answers, she uncovers a horrifying secret: their seemingly ordinary neighbors are actually predatory, monstrous trolls rooted in ancient Norse folklore. Hiding in plain sight, these creatures have set their sights on corrupting Nick and destroying the Marino family from within.

Why You'll Love This Book

A prized highlight for vintage horror collectors and fans of Grady Hendrix's Paperbacks from Hell, A Nice Place to Live delivers pure 1980s nostalgia, shocking twists, and atmospheric monster suspense. Readers who enjoy classic small-town terror, creature features, and suburban horror stories by authors such as Stephen King ('Salem's Lot), Ira Levin (The Stepford Wives), John Saul, Michael McDowell, and Bernard Taylor will find Sloane's novel impossible to put down.
