Newbery Medalist Virginia Hamilton's Biography of W.E.B. Du Bois

First published in 1972, W.E.B. Du Bois: A Biography by celebrated author Virginia Hamilton provides a meticulously researched, compelling portrait of one of the most influential African American intellectuals, sociologists, and civil rights leaders in history.

Written with characteristic insight and clarity, Hamilton chronicles the long, extraordinary life and career of Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois (1868–1963). From his groundbreaking academic work as the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard to his authorship of the landmark text The Souls of Black Folk, the biography traces Du Bois's pivotal role in shaping 20th-century history. Hamilton covers his leadership in establishing the Niagara Movement, co-founding the NAACP, editing The Crisis magazine, and advocating for Pan-Africanism and global civil rights in his fight against racial injustice.
