A Pennsylvania Small-Town Historical Saga of Chicken Hill, Black & Jewish Alliances, and Secrets
In 1972, construction workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, unearth a human skeleton buried at the bottom of a well, re-opening long-buried secrets in the historic neighborhood of Chicken Hill. Decades earlier in the 1920s and 1930s, Chicken Hill served as a close-knit sanctuary where Black families and Jewish European immigrants lived side-by-side on the margins of white society.
At the center of the neighborhood is Chona Ludlow, the compassionate owner of the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, and her theater-owner husband Moshe. When racist local officials seek to institutionalize Dodo, a young deaf Black orphan boy, Chona and her neighbors unite to hide him from state authorities.
