An Ohio True Crime Investigation of Jeffrey Lundgren, Cult Extremism, and the Kirtland Family Murders

In April 1989, in Kirtland, Ohio, unfrocked lay minister Jeffrey Lundgren persuaded members of his breakaway religious cult that a divine revelation required the execution of fellow cult members Dennis and Cheryl Avery and their three young daughters.

Investigative reporter Pete Earley reconstructs the cult's paramilitary indoctrination, the execution of the Avery family inside a rented barn, and the multi-state FBI manhunt that apprehended Lundgren in California. The book analyzes the psychological mechanisms of cult control, religious fanaticism, and the 1990 capital murder trial.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Pete Earley delivers a chilling, deeply researched account of cult mind control and fanaticism. Featuring trial testimony and FBI investigative records, this volume is essential reading for fans of Jon Krakauer, Edward Humes, and Steven Naifeh.
