Viktor Frankl's Theoretical Masterpiece on Logotherapy and Existential Meaning

In The Doctor and the Soul: From Psychotherapy to Logotherapy, celebrated Viennese psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Dr. Viktor E. Frankl presents the comprehensive clinical and theoretical foundation of logotherapy—known globally as the "Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy" alongside Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis and Alfred Adler's individual psychology.

First published in English in 1955, this seminal text outlines Frankl's belief that humanity's primary drive is not the pursuit of pleasure or power, but the "will to meaning." Frankl analyzes the pervasive modern condition of the "existential vacuum"—a state of inner emptiness and aimlessness—and demonstrates how logotherapy guides individuals out of despair. He explains how human beings can discover profound purpose through three primary avenues: creative work or achievement, the experience of love and beauty, and the courageous attitude adopted toward unavoidable suffering, illness, and mortality.

Why You'll Love This Book

Serving as the theoretical companion to Frankl's immortal memoir Man's Search for Meaning, The Doctor and the Soul is a classic of psychiatric literature and existential humanism. Readers interested in existential psychology, psychotherapy, philosophy, and foundational works by Irvin D. Yalom, Rollo May, Erich Fromm, Carl Jung, Carl Rogers, and Abraham Maslow will find Dr. Frankl's insights transformative.
