A Step-by-Step Graphite Portraiture Manual on Grid Scaling, Facial Anatomy, and Smooth Shading

Artist and instructor Lee Hammond delivers a structured pencil drawing manual designed to teach realistic portraiture using photographic references. The guide introduces Hammond's signature smooth-shading technique, utilizing graphite pencils, tortillons (blending stumps), and kneaded erasers to eliminate harsh pencil lines and render realistic skin tones.

Through clear step-by-step exercises, the manual breaks down facial feature construction, detailing eyebrow placement, eye reflection highlights, nose structures, lip contours, hair textures, and ear alignment. Hammond demonstrates how to use the grid method to accurately transfer photo proportions onto drawing paper, manage value scales from soft highlights to deep shadows, and capture individual likenesses.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Lee Hammond breaks down realistic portraiture into achievable steps using grid proportioning and tortillon blending. With detailed feature-by-feature instruction, this handbook is a fundamental reference for graphite artists and portrait sketchers.
