The Classic Museum of Modern Art Definitive Study of Impressionist Art by John Rewald

Published by the Museum of Modern Art, John Rewald's seminal work stands as the definitive, foundational narrative of the Impressionist movement. Rewald chronicles the revolutionary period from 1855 to 1886, tracing how Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and Paul Cézanne challenged the rigid French Salons.

Drawing on over 600 illustrations, personal letters, original exhibition reviews, and legal documents, Rewald details the financial struggles, artistic rivalries, and social upheavals that reshaped modern art.

Why You’ll Love This Book

John Rewald combines scholarly rigor, comprehensive archival sources, and beautiful visual documentation. The gold-standard art history reference for art historians, collectors, and Impressionism lovers.
