T.H. White's Rare 1957 Sci-Fi Adventure of Telepathy and World Domination

First published in 1957 and released as a vintage paperback by Avon Books under their Avon Camelot imprint in 1967, The Master is a thrilling, hard-to-find science fiction adventure by renowned British author T.H. White. Taking a fascinating departure from his celebrated Arthurian masterpiece The Once and Future King, White delivers a suspenseful and thought-provoking tale of survival, mind control, and moral ambiguity.

The story begins when twelve-year-old twins Nicky and Judy, along with their dog Jokey, are accidentally stranded on Rockall, a steep, desolate rock jutting out of the remote North Atlantic. To their astonishment, they discover the island is entirely hollow and houses a covert, high-tech sanctuary. It is ruled by "The Master," a 157-year-old telepathic super-genius who has lived through more than a century of human conflict. Believing that humanity is incapable of self-governance, The Master is preparing to use his advanced technology and mind-control capabilities to conquer the globe and enforce a dictatorial, absolute peace. Trapped inside the rock, the twins must find a way to resist his psychic influence and stop his terrifying utopian plot.

Why You'll Love This Book

Blending classic mid-century British adventure with engaging science fiction concepts, The Master is a hidden gem in T.H. White's bibliography. Readers who love vintage YA sci-fi, secluded island mysteries, and works by authors like John Christopher (The Tripods), Peter Dickinson, Madeleine L'Engle (A Wrinkle in Time), C.S. Lewis, and Arthur C. Clarke will find this suspenseful novel immensely enjoyable.
