A Gore Vidal Classic Mystery of Hamptons High Society, Parties, and Murder

Written by iconic author Gore Vidal under the pseudonym Edgar Box, this classic mystery features dashing public relations man Peter Cutler Sargeant II. Hired by wealthy socialite Peaches Hampton to handle public relations for a lavish end-of-summer party in East Hampton, Long Island, Sargeant expects sun, surf, and high-society gossip.

The festivities shatter when Peaches's niece mysteriously drowns during a crowded beach outing. When lethal doses of sleeping pills are discovered in the victim's system, Sargeant investigates a eccentric cast of wealthy suspects, including the victim's painter husband and a gossiping columnist.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Gore Vidal crafts witty satire, 1950s Hamptons high-society drama, and a classic amateur sleuth murder mystery. A sophisticated vintage mystery for fans of Agatha Christie and Golden Age detective fiction.

How We Grade Our Books

📸 True-to-Life Photos: For all vintage and pre-loved books, the photos on the page are of the exact physical copy on our shelf. Brand-new books feature official publisher cover art.
New: Direct from the publisher; immaculate, unread condition.
Like New: Pristine condition with minimal to no shelf wear; looks unread.
Very Good: Lightly read with minor shelf wear or light cover creasing. Pages are clean, crisp, and unmarked with a tight binding. (Our baseline standard for pre-loved books.)
Good: A well-loved reading copy with visible shelf wear or page aging, but fully intact and structurally sound.
