A Bestselling 1996 Travel Memoir of a Farewell Journey Across Great Britain

Before moving his family back to the United States after twenty years in England, Bill Bryson set out on a final seven-week journey across the United Kingdom. Traveling exclusively by public buses and trains, Bryson navigated from Dover and the English countryside up through Wales, the Lake District, and the Scottish Highlands.

With his signature affectionate irony, Bryson records everyday encounters with British eccentrics, regional transit mishaps, seaside pub culture, and historic architecture. His narrative balances sharp observational humor with a genuine reverence for Britain's landscape and heritage.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Bill Bryson delivers an iconic work of modern travel writing brimming with dry humor and observant social commentary. Essential reading for lovers of British culture, travel memoirs, and observational comedy.

How We Grade Our Books

📸 True-to-Life Photos: For all vintage and pre-loved books, the photos on the page are of the exact physical copy on our shelf. Brand-new books feature official publisher cover art.
New: Direct from the publisher; immaculate, unread condition.
Like New: Pristine condition with minimal to no shelf wear; looks unread.
Very Good: Lightly read with minor shelf wear or light cover creasing. Pages are clean, crisp, and unmarked with a tight binding. (Our baseline standard for pre-loved books.)
Good: A well-loved reading copy with visible shelf wear or page aging, but fully intact and structurally sound.
