Condemned To Devil's Island by Blair Niles

Blair Niles's 1928 Exposé of the Notorious French Penal Colony

In Condemned to Devil's Island: The Biography of an Unknown Convict, pioneering American explorer and author Blair Niles delivers a researched portrait of life inside the world's most infamous penal colony. Originally published in 1928, this landmark book was the result of Niles's own daring expedition to French Guiana, where she became the first woman to extensively study and interview the forgotten prisoners of Devil's Island.

Based on the author's firsthand research and interviews with actual convicts, the narrative traces the brutal experiences of a young composite figure named Michel. Initially naive and clinging to hope, Michel is thrust into an inescapable nightmare of backbreaking jungle labor, rampant disease, sadistic guards, and crushing despair. As he navigates the violent, predatory social hierarchy of the prison camps and dreams of plotting an impossible escape through the unforgiving South American wilderness, Niles presents a vivid indictment of the French penal system that shocked international readers and fueled early prison reform movements.
