A Greenwich Village True Crime Memoir of Joel Steinberg, Adoption Fraud, and Child Protection

In November 1987, six-year-old Lisa Steinberg was beaten to death inside a Greenwich Village apartment in New York City. The child had been illegally placed into the custody of prominent defense attorney Joel Steinberg and his partner, Hedda Nussbaum, by her birth mother, Michele Launders, who was lied to regarding the legal adoption process.

Writing with journalist Penina Spiegel, Michele Launders presents her personal account of seeking her daughter, Elizabeth, and uncovering the illegal adoption ring and domestic abuse that led to the tragedy. The volume covers the Manhattan homicide investigation, trial testimony, and legal reforms in adoption procedures.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Michele Launders delivers a primary-source memoir on legal ethics, adoption reform, and maternal advocacy. Ideal for readers of Dena Kleiman, Teresa Carpenter, and Ann Rule.
