Bob Hope's Classic 1966 USO Wartime Memoir of Entertaining Troops in Vietnam

First published in 1966 by Doubleday and released in vintage mass-market paperback by Avon Books in 1967, Five Women I Love: Bob Hope's Vietnam Story is a touching, funny, and deeply personal memoir by legendary comedian and entertainer Bob Hope.

Chronicling his extensive 1964 and 1965 USO Christmas tours across Southeast Asia during the early years of the Vietnam War, Hope recounts bringing star-studded entertainment, music, and laughter to American service members stationed in Saigon, Da Nang, Thailand, Guam, and aboard aircraft carriers in the South China Sea. Blending his signature rapid-fire comedy and self-deprecating wit with genuine warmth, Hope shares unforgettable backstage anecdotes, harrowing near-misses in active combat zones, and poignant visits to military field hospitals. The book's title pays tribute to the courageous, talented female performers who braved war zone conditions alongside him, including Joey Heatherton, Anita Bryant, Janice Paige, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Carroll Baker, and Miss World.

Why You'll Love This Book

A valuable firsthand historical document and a testament to the tradition of military entertainment, Five Women I Love captures Bob Hope at his absolute best—using humor to connect, heal, and boost morale during a turbulent era. Readers who enjoy military history, 1960s pop culture, show business memoirs, and books by authors like George Burns, Bing Crosby, Red Skelton, Sammy Davis Jr., and Ernie Pyle will cherish this classic volume.
