The Illearth War by Stephen R. Donaldson

The Epic Second Volume in Stephen R. Donaldson's Iconic Dark Fantasy Trilogy

First published in 1977, The Illearth War is the gripping second novel in Stephen R. Donaldson's groundbreaking high fantasy saga, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever. Renowned for its complex anti-hero and profound moral weight, the novel remains a cornerstone of modern epic fantasy.

After spending several grueling months recovering in the ordinary world, Thomas Covenant—a bitter, cynical author suffering from leprosy—is suddenly summoned back to the magical realm known as "The Land." To his shock, while only months passed for him, forty years have elapsed in The Land since his previous visit. High Lord Elena now leads the Council of Lords in a desperate fight against Lord Foul the Despiser, who has unearthed the ancient, corrupting artifact known as the Illearth Stone to unleash catastrophic warfare upon the realm. Bound to a white gold ring—a talisman of wild magic he stubbornly refuses to accept as real—Covenant must navigate tragic alliances, siege warfare, and his own psychological torment as The Land stands on the brink of total destruction.
