Local Anaesthetic by Günter Grass

Nobel Laureate Günter Grass's Sharp Satire of 1960s Radicalism and Political Compromise

Originally published in German in 1969 as Örtlich betäubt and translated into English in 1970 by Ralph Manheim, Local Anaesthetic is a compelling literary novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Günter Grass. Set against the turbulent backdrop of 1967 West Berlin during the height of the Vietnam War protests, the novel offers a provocative exploration of the generation gap in post-war Germany.

The narrative centers on Eberhard Starusch, a middle-aged history and German teacher undergoing extensive orthodontic treatment for a severe overbite. Reclining in his dentist's chair under the numbing influence of local anesthesia, Starusch engages in extended debates with his stoic, rationalist dentist while reflecting on his 17-year-old star pupil, Philipp Scherbaum. Horrified by the horrors of the Vietnam War, Scherbaum plans a shocking political protest: burning his beloved dog in front of cake-eating bourgeois patrons on the fashionable Kurfürstendamm boulevard. As Starusch tries to dissuade his student, the dental chair and local anesthetic serve as potent metaphors for a comfortable, middle-aged society that prefers self-numbing compromise over confronting uncomfortable moral truths.
