Edgar Award Winner Julie Smith's New Orleans Mystery of Family, Secrets, and Murder

In Louisiana Lament, Edgar Award-winning mystery author Julie Smith delivers a fast-paced, atmospheric thriller set in the vibrant cultural landscape of New Orleans. Featuring her celebrated series protagonist Talba Wallis, the novel combines private investigation suspense with Southern Gothic flavor.

The narrative centers on tech-savvy African American poet and private investigator Talba Wallis (who performs spoken word as the Baroness de Pontalba), who is dragged into a high-stakes case when her estranged sister, Janessa, becomes the prime suspect in a brutal murder. The victim is Allyson Brown, a wealthy, glamorous arts patron found shot dead in her pool. Partnering with her crusty mentor, veteran private detective Eddie Valentino, Talba dives into the underbelly of New Orleans' literary elite, corporate rivalries, and long-buried family secrets to clear her sister's name before the killer targets someone else.

Why You'll Love This Book

Offering a rich sense of place, witty banter, and a complex female sleuth, Louisiana Lament showcases Julie Smith's masterclass in modern regional crime fiction. Readers who enjoy New Orleans mysteries, gritty detective series, and books by authors like James Lee Burke, Sue Grafton, Laura Lippman, Karin Slaughter, Walter Mosley, and Janet Evanovich will find this mystery satisfying.
