The Sodom And Gomorrah Business by Barry N. Malzberg

Barry N. Malzberg's Satirical New Wave Dystopia of Institutional Control and Wasteland Survival

In The Sodom and Gomorrah Business, John W. Campbell Award-winning author Barry N. Malzberg delivers a dark, provocative, and razor-sharp satire of post-apocalyptic science fiction. First published in 1974, the novel takes a surreal, deconstructive look at military conditioning, psychological isolation, and post-collapse society.

The story centers on young mercenary trainees raised within the regimented, strictly isolated environment of the Institute. Indoctrinated from birth, they are taught grim lessons about "the Network"—a savage, ruined wasteland outside the Institute's guarded walls allegedly populated by feral subhumans and utter chaos. Driven by intense curiosity and the desire to uncover the truth for themselves, a group of trainees embarks on an expedition into the unknown outside world. As they navigate the dangerous remnants of civilization, they discover that the reality of the Network is far more complex and disturbing than they were led to believe, entangling them in systemic forces that threaten to shatter their entire existence.
