Philip Durham and Everett L. Jones's Groundbreaking History of Black Trail Drivers, Lawmen, and Outlaws in the Old West

First published in hardcover in 1966 and released in vintage paperback by Bantam Books in 1969 as a Bantam Pathfinder edition, The Adventures of the Negro Cowboys by Philip Durham and Everett L. Jones is a vital work of American historical recovery.

Adapted from the authors' landmark 1965 study The Negro Cowboys, this engrossing chronicle uncovers the long-overlooked contributions of an estimated 5,000 African American cowboys who rode the Western trails, worked cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail, and built the frontier following the Civil War. Durham and Jones draw on original letters, historical journals, and period newspapers to bring to life real-world legends, including rodeo star Bill Pickett (inventor of bulldogging), sharp-shooting cowboy Nat Love (better known as "Deadwood Dick"), cattle drive pioneer Bose Ikard, outlaw Cherokee Bill, and the brave Indian-fighting Buffalo Soldiers of the US Cavalry.

Why You'll Love This Book

A thrilling, fast-paced piece of historical non-fiction, The Adventures of the Negro Cowboys dispels Hollywood myths and restores essential figures to their rightful place in Western history. Readers, educators, and collectors interested in Black history, American West history, rodeo traditions, and works by authors like Dee Brown (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee), David McCullough, and Henry Louis Gates Jr. will find this volume invaluable.
