The Debut 1980 Speculative Fiction Anthology Featuring Early Works by Orson Scott Card, Howard Waldrop, and Elizabeth A. Lynn

First published in 1980 as a paperback original by Berkley Books, The Berkley Showcase: New Writings in Science Fiction and Fantasy, Vol. 1 was edited by veteran SF editors Victoria Schochet and John Silbersack to serve as an uninhibited launching pad for innovative, boundary-pushing speculative fiction.

Designed as a prestigious house anthology for bold storytelling, this debut volume gathers eight original, previously unpublished novellas and short stories from prominent visionaries and rising stars of 1980s science fiction and fantasy. Notable highlights include Howard Waldrop's brilliant novelette "Billy Big-Eyes," Orson Scott Card's fairytale-infused fantasy "The Princess and the Bear," World Fantasy Award winner Elizabeth A. Lynn's "The Gods of Reorth," Janet Morris's "Raising the Green Lion," and D. C. Poyer's acclaimed corporate-dystopian novella "Stepfather Bank," alongside fiction by John Kessel, Karl Hansen, and Ronald Anthony Cross.

Why You'll Love This Book

Offering a rare glimpse into the evolving landscape of 1980s speculative fiction, The Berkley Showcase Vol. 1 is a prized addition for vintage paperback collectors and short fiction connoisseurs. Readers who enjoy classic original anthologies like Damon Knight's Orbit, Terry Carr's Universe, Harlan Ellison's Dangerous Visions, and Robert Silverberg's New Dimensions will find this collection exceptional.
