An Allen Say Hardcover Picture Book of Japanese-American Christmas Traditions

In post-WWII Japan, young Hiroki catches a cold after playing near the garden pond. While resting under a warm futon, he watches his mother dig up a small pine tree from their courtyard, place it in a glazed pot, and decorate its branches with folded paper origami cranes and burning candles. His mother shares stories of her girlhood in California, introducing Hiroki to her Christmas traditions and presenting him with a carved wooden samurai sword.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Caldecott Medalist Allen Say's delicate watercolor paintings capture a quiet, cross-cultural holiday tradition. A timeless Christmas picture book for family read-alouds, holiday collections, and multicultural literature lovers.
