Tunnel Through The Deeps by Harry Harrison

Harry Harrison's Classic Alternate History Steampunk Adventure of High Engineering and Empire

In Tunnel Through The Deeps (also published as A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah!), Hugo Award-nominated author Harry Harrison delivers a captivating masterclass in alternate history and proto-steampunk speculative fiction. The novel imagines a world where the American Revolution was crushed in 1775, George Washington was executed for treason, and North America remains a crown colony within a thriving, steam-powered 20th-century British Empire.

The story centers on Captain Augustine "Gus" Washington, a brilliant American engineer and direct descendant of the rebel general. Driven by a desire to clear his family's disgraced name and earn the hand of Sir Isambard Donald's aristocratic daughter, Gus spearheads the grandest engineering feat in human history: constructing a submerged, vacuum-sealed train tunnel across the Atlantic Ocean floor to connect London and New York. Powered by steam, coal, and nuclear energy, Gus must battle ocean depths, corporate saboteurs, political assassins, and imperial conspiracies to bring his visionary dream to reality.
