A Brigitte Jordan Foundational Medical Anthropology Study of Comparative Childbirth

From sterile, high-tech American hospital delivery rooms to the warm, family-centered earthen huts of Yucatan midwives, the physical act of childbirth varies dramatically across human societies. Pioneer medical anthropologist Brigitte Jordan conducts an immersive comparative study across four distinct settings: the United States, Sweden, Holland, and Yucatan, Mexico.

Jordan demonstrates that birth is not merely a biological event, but a culturally produced experience where medical technology, authoritative knowledge, family involvement, and social customs dictate how women bring new life into the world.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Brigitte Jordan revolutionized medical anthropology by introducing the concept of "authoritative knowledge" in healthcare settings. An indispensable classic for anthropologists, midwives, healthcare professionals, and sociology readers.
