An Award-Winning YA Classic of Black Pride, Music, and Community Resilience

In The Soul Brothers and Sister Lou, acclaimed African American author Kristin Hunter delivers a powerful, pioneering coming-of-age novel set in 1960s North Philadelphia. The story centers on fourteen-year-old Louretta Hawkins, a spirited girl growing up in an overcrowded, low-income Black neighborhood plagued by poverty and frequent police harassment.

Seeking a safe space off the streets for her friends, Louretta transforms her older brother's vacant printing shop into a vibrant youth clubhouse. There, a group of local teens discovers their shared musical talents, blending gospel harmonies with rhythm and blues to form a band called "The Soul Brothers and Sister Lou." But when tragedy strikes—resulting in the fatal police shooting of a band member—Louretta and her friends channel their grief, anger, and emerging Black pride into their music, capturing the authentic sound of their community and securing a recording contract that gives voice to their struggle.
