A Hawaiian Noir Literary Novel of Oahu Gangs, Prison Inmates, and Full-Body Tattoos

Inside Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu, incarcerated Hawaiian native Ken Hideyoshi sits for long sessions with Cal, a silent master tattoo artist, receiving an intricate full-body traditional tattoo before his release.

As needles etch ink into his skin, Ken recounts his turbulent upbringing in the agricultural town of Kahuku, his abusive childhood, his descent into Honolulu underworld crime syndicates, and the personal betrayals that led to his imprisonment.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Chris McKinney delivers a gritty Hawaiian noir classic that bypasses resort stereotypes to examine working-class island realism, crime, and identity. A must-read for fans of Kaui Hart Hemmings, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Chester Himes.
